Take a Bite Out of Books
Teams from Nine CEFLS Libraries Take a Bite out of Books!
Teams of readers from nine CEFLS member libraries will square off to “Take a Bite out of Books” at the Champlain Centre Mall in Plattsburgh on July 25.
“Take a Bite out of Books” (TABOB) features a game style quiz competition among teams of fifth, sixth and seventh graders who represent libraries in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties. Teams are quizzed on their knowledge of six books that are selected by area librarians. Participating libraries include: Plattsburgh Public Library, Saranac Lake Free Library, Champlain Memorial Library, Sherman Free Library, Port Henry, Schroon Lake Library, the Peru Free Library, AuSable Forks Free Library and E.M. Cooper Memorial Public Library (one team), and the Dannemora Free Library.
Last year over 70 children and 40 adults participated as quiz team members, coaches and “encouragement specialists.” The Saranac Lake Alchemists narrowly beat out Peru Team One and took home the championship trophy.
Competition Coordinator Jackie Viestenz of Sherman Free Library, Port Henry says “We’ve chosen some great books that are sure to appeal to middle-school aged boys and girls,” “We’ve had reports from the field that teams are busy reading in preparation for the big day. The “quizmasters are also busy reading the books and preparing some interesting questions, she adds. The TABOB project has received support from several local funders, including the Kiwanis Noon Club of Plattsburgh, Stewart’s Foundation, Target, and the morning Rotary Club of Plattsburgh. 2009 Summer Reading funds from the NY State Library were also used to support TABOB activities.
